Science of Happiness

The Science of Happiness - Colleges

Overview of the Program: Historically, pursuit of Happiness has been the oldest pursuit of human kind. Once the survival was taken care of, this pursuit became even more important. Today, we are the most comfortable generation on this planet with the most advanced technology; communication and all kind of comforts, which were once available to the royals, are now available to even the bottom of pyramid. In spite of this upheaval, happiness and well being is continuously going down. Depression is fastest becoming the number one killer in the world. There are more people who are depressed than they were in The Great Depression 1929.  All this while, the field of psychology has placed a lot of attention on what’s wrong with people and what we can do to treat disorders of the mind. More recently, however, the field has broadened its scope to give more attention to the positive side of human nature and the most effective ways to pursue the good life. This experiential course on Science of Happiness focuses on the emotional well being development by examining scientific research centered on the nature of happiness. Most of us live our life on the basis of unconscious beliefs. These beliefs lead to the emotions that lead to thinking that finally lead to all the actions we take (or we don’t take) in our life.  Our happiness is completely dependent on our emotions, thoughts and actions and all of these are dependent on the beliefs. Since all of these beliefs are formed unconsciously, our happiness also becomes accidental. When something is accidental, it means we have no control over it. So the major objective of the program is to give the power of happiness by choice by helping you discover your unconscious beliefs and replacing the disempowering beliefs with empowering one’s. Apart from tools like gratitude, savoring, empathy, compassion to enhance positive emotions and tools to deal with negative emotions, other major topics include the nature of happiness, 4 P’s of Happiness, tools to deal with hindrances to our happiness, Orbit of Life, “I” Constitution, My relationship with Failure etc. It includes lot of experiential activities (individual & Group).

Each participant get a handbook created by Berkeley Well Being, California which will be filled up by the participants during the course.

Duration of the Course: Depending on the need of the college, there are different formats.

EXAMS
Exams will consist of 50 multiple-choice questions drawn from material in lecture and in the readings.
The first three exams are non-cumulative and will be held in class.
An optional, fully cumulative final exam will be conducted after the program. The final exam score may replace your lowest score of the prior three, and is therefore an option for anyone who had to miss an exam during the semester or for anyone who wishes to improve their overall grade in the course. Only highest three exam scores count toward the final grade. Therefore, if you have taken all three regular midterms during the semester, taking the final cannot lower your overall grade.

What you are wearing today

What you are wearing today?

In olden times when human entered the evolution circle, all came naked. And it was the time when they tried to relate with animals, birds, reptiles and other thousands of species on earth. But as they moved ahead with the power of thinking, slowly they picked the idea on how they are different and unique. Uniqueness to a point where they all made conscious attempts to be different from not only animals but also within the human sphere.

So to maintain the idea of specialness external body wearable’s really worked well; some wore leaves, some used animal skin and bones, some used bird feathers, some used bark of tree, colorful marks on body, exotic crown on head, body piercing and lot many other things were practiced. Even in present day we have formal wear for office, casuals for friends and family, ethnic for cultural occasions and so on. Because once you wear them they somehow support the expected mindset.

Relax! This write up is not meant to question or advice on “What you should wear every day?” because each of us spend good time deciding even for a simple pair of socks. With these texts the attempt is to bring your attention on:
What concept you are wearing in your mind? And is that working for you?

It happened last week, a group of grade 7 students were asked to right there view on Honesty. With no specific consent every child came up with their statements, which were later posted on the student wall. There was a student who wrote “Honesty is an expensive gift; don’t expect it from rich people”. If you notice, he is wearing such an unsound concept at such an innocent age.

My question to you is, if he continues to wear the same concept, what will be the outcome? What will be his approach towards people, doing very good financially? What will be his own financial motives?

Let me bring you back to the intention: What are your own 100’s of concept which you continue to wear everyday unconsciously and are affecting you in your career, health, relationships and other domains of life. And every morning when you get to choose a cloth from wardrobe, will you also replace a stinky thought with a new one more positive for the day?

At Happiness practitioner program, we take you through dozens of different exercise, which will change the way you look at life and personal Happiness. Time to shake your Beliefs

Time to shake your Beliefs

Once it happened that a man bought a new house. He got the best furniture, curtains, decoration stuff but he was still not fulfilled.

He thought – “ there is still something that is not right.” He changed the curtains but still it was not perfect. He changed the whole furniture but nothing worked. Slowly, one by one he changed each and every item in the house but nothing worked. Again the process started by changing the curtains and so on. One day, he called his close friend and discussed about his problem.

His friend started asking him questions when suddenly this man realized that it was the paint on the walls that he did not want. He never realized it was the paint because this painting was done long back. This paint on walls is nothing but the main strong belief we imbibe while growing up. This belief drives most of our decisions in life but the problem is that this belief is an unconscious belief and we are not even aware of this.

We live an accidental life. We put all our efforts to achieve something but after achieving that, we realize this is not what we wanted. This leads to an unfulfilled life. When we suddenly discover this major belief of our life, everything starts making sense. We get a choice to create or re design happiness in our life. This is what you discover in one of the many activities which we conduct at out Happiness Practitioner 2 days Experiential Workshops
.

This sudden realisation makes you understand the Belief - that this is what I want or this is what i don't want? By discovering the beliefs behind your behavior, you get a choice to create your own happiness. This is an opportunity for you to come and attend a 2 days Certified Happiness Practitioner program by Happiitude & Berkeley Well Being, California. Being independent is a very limited way of living life

Being independent is a very limited way of living life

Being an independent person is a very limited way of living life. It is not about right or wrong. It is about living an empowering or dis empowering life. We are living with other beings, so first of all being independent is just an illusion. The food served on our plate is not done independently. There are 100's or may be 1000' s of beings involved. Even the gases we are breathing are coming from trees. Still we like to live in an illusion that we are independent. This is a very strong identity and we are very proud of that.
No doubt, being independent give us results but we forget to look at the pay offs. So what are the pay offs of being independent? Let us ponder over this.
Sometimes when we can really take help from someone who will be more than happy to help us but being independent comes in our way.
Independent people dont show their emotions and keep struggling by invalidating their emotions. Put up a strong face and after a time, start living an inauthentic life.
So what is the way out of this? This is very simple. Just a realisation that being independent is just an identity which i picked up while growing like many other identities. It is not me but an identity. Suddenly, there is a distance between you and the identity. You become free of it..next time, when being independent empowers you, wear it as identity and when it disempower you, take it off.

Cycle of Happiness

Cycle of Happiness

Before we find out what is the cycle of Happiness, it is very important to understand what is happiness. Happiness is a very subjective term that means different things to different people. The biggest challenge is to define happiness. Although there are many definitions given by different religions, philosophers, spiritual leaders, economists and now science as well. All of these definitions are suited to some set of societies, people or mindsets but it is still very difficult to find a definition that suits everyone. The closest I could find is Happiness is Pleasure + Purpose. Pleasure in this definition is defined as positive emotions and positive experiences. Although my own work with people shows that it is not just pleasure (positive emotions and experiences) and purpose that gives people happiness but many a times pain (negative emotions) and purpose also gives them happiness. For example, running a marathon need lot of preparation. Most of these preparations are not positive experiences but lot of pain. No matter how late you sleep, you need to get up early in the morning and you won’t find a marathon runner complaining about it. No matter whether you are a professional or amateur, last few miles are always painful and need you to break all your limits. While going through those last miles, people feel all kind of negative emotions like frustration, stress, anger and so on. Still they keep running and touch the end line because of the purpose they associate with it. So if we closely look at it, it is not pleasure or pain but purpose that gives people happiness.

Let us look at purpose little more closely and see what do we mean by purpose. Purpose is nothing but meaningfulness. Whenever people associate empowering meaning with something, it starts to mean a lot to them. They start seeing purpose in doing this and this purpose keep on driving them. There are lots of things to ponder about purpose.

The first question that arises in our mind is how do we create purpose? Let us look at this with a small story. Once a researcher thought of studying people who are doing physical labor work. He reached out a mason and asked him, do you enjoy your work? Mason replied, what is there to enjoy? I am coming here from last 10 years and building this wall. Everyday, I keep on putting bricks and putting cement on it. Same routine boring work, evening I go back home. There is nothing to enjoy.

Researcher went to another masons and almost everyone gave same reply. Researcher got disappointed and as soon as he was to leave that place, he saw a mason enjoying, singing and doing the same work. He went to that mason and asked, do you enjoy your work? Mason replied, of course I love it. Researcher asked him, what is that you enjoy the most? Mason said, I am building this beautiful church wall where people will come and pray. I am serving the society in a big way. This is the best part of my work.

Now if we study the story closely, we will see that all the masons doing the same work but the one that found a purpose in doing this was the only one enjoying. Now whether that purpose was right or wrong, true of false, positive or negative, big or small it is not important. What is important about a purpose is whether it empowers you or not. If it empowers, it is worth pursuing that.

So one thing we are sure that purpose is not a universal truth but a relative truth (although relative truth is not truth but a lie but let’s not call it a lie ). It is different for different people but the question how it is formed is still not answered. We need to dig it little more deeply.

Let us look at the mason again. How the mason who was enjoying his work formed so empowering purpose? So some possibilities are that person who hired him told him that we are building a church here and you need to build a wall here. Well, if this is the case then why not other masons got the same purpose. This is where your personal beliefs, experiences and culture come in to picture. There is a possibility that this mason come with a belief system that building a church is a service to society because his mother told him so (oh gosh!) or he was supported by church when he was growing up. There are hundreds of possibilities and all of these sounds very silly and impractical but these all start making sense when you start looking at your own life.

Questions for you:
1. Pick up some of the things you enjoy doing the most.
2. What are your beliefs and purpose about those activities?
3. Where did you pick up those beliefs and purpose? Of course, you formed it but from where did you learn that it is good?
4. Did your friends, family, Media, some celebrity told you?
5. Do you have any personal experience related to that, which formed such belief?

Unfortunately, most of us are not aware of this. So most of the purposes in our life are unconsciously created and whenever anything is created unconsciously, we don’t have power over it. All the results are just accidental. So whether our purpose is giving us results or not giving us result, it is accidental. Our happiness is majorly dependent on the purpose and our purpose is set by accident. So happiness in our life is accidental. It is not in our control. When it comes, we take credit for this but when it leaves and unhappiness come, we blame others. This is the cycle of our happiness. Now the time is to break this cycle. So how do we break this cycle?

Let us hear some people who got a chance to break their cycle and set it by choice.
